Anyone who wants to make their own game no longer needs to know programming or use complex software. Just describe in plain language what the game should look like, and Google Labs' 'Playground' will build it using artificial intelligence. Google says the platform also lets users play the finished games and share them with others.
According to Google, Playground was created with users in mind who are interested in making games but are not skilled in programming. Instead of writing code, games are made through text instructions on the platform. Afterward, users can change different elements and features of the game simply by giving instructions through chat.
Building a game on Google Playground can begin from a completely blank canvas, or users can make use of the sample instructions provided on the platform. Once a game is created, new instructions can be given to change its rules, characters, movements, and environment, and the changes can be tested directly in the web browser. There is no need to start over if you want to change a part after the first version — just describe which part needs what change. In this way, new features can be added step by step, or existing elements arranged to suit individual taste.
Games made on Playground can be played directly in the web browser, so they can be enjoyed on a range of devices such as smartphones and laptops. Finished games can be saved privately, shared with others through a link, or published in Playground's 'Explore' gallery. However, the availability of these options may vary depending on the type of game. Google said Playground was not built as a replacement for conventional game-making software. Using the platform's game-building feature will require a Google One membership, and the platform will gradually be opened up to everyone.
To broaden game-creation possibilities further, Google is also working with software maker Unity. As part of this effort, the company is experimenting with integrating Unity Spark with Playground.
